In the statistics, Japanese workers are not efficient: the productivity/hour is low. It is the lower than OECD average and the lowest in the developed countries.
Long-hour working habit is one of the reasons. Workers can earn extra wage by over-time work, and they need it seriously.
I have another opinion. Japanese try to get 100% quality while others are satisfied with 95% quality. As you know, the production/time regression curve is linear until 95%. For the last 5%, we have to spend double. Japanese customers want 100% products while 95% is enough in other markets. It forces Japanese workers work long.
